A Journey of Resilience
To many, the path to becoming a lawyer may seem insurmountable. However, for Charles Pasquali, a law graduate from the University of Juba, the journey was one of resilience and determination. After suffering a poisoning incident that left him visually impaired, Charles faced unimaginable challenges both academically and personally. Yet, through his unwavering determination and the support of Undying Hope’s scholarship, he was able to overcome the odds and pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer. While his physical scars remained, the emotional and psychological challenges were often even harder to bear. For years, he had to navigate a world seemingly designed for people without disabilities.
His triumph of will brought him to law school. Charles spent long hours reading and writing, using adaptive technologies to participate fully in his studies. “I was always determined, but my disability made everything more difficult,” he says. “I had to learn how to adapt and use technology and support systems to keep up with my peers. Despite my challenges, I remained focused on my goal of practicing law.”
However, at the beginning of his third year, the burden of tuition became an overwhelming obstacle. Financial hardships at home, compounded by a lack of encouragement from relatives who doubted him due to his disability, left him feeling lost.
“I was ready to give up. My relatives didn’t believe I could succeed. Some even suggested I quit law school because of my disability. I didn’t know how I could continue, but I refused to abandon my dream.”
Then came a turning point: Charles discovered the scholarship program offered by Undying Hope. This scholarship, aimed at students facing significant financial difficulties, restored his hope. With nothing to lose, he applied and was soon granted a scholarship that would change the course of his academic career.
“The moment I found out I had been selected for the scholarship felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off my shoulders,” he recalls. “It wasn’t just the financial support—it was a reminder that someone believed in me, even when others did not.”
This scholarship allowed him to pursue his education without constantly fearing he would not be able to pay his tuition. By early 2025, Charles graduated with a first-class law degree, becoming one of the few visually impaired lawyers in his community. His academic success stood as a testament to his resilience, opening doors for him to join a well-known law firm in Juba, where he now practices as a full-fledged attorney.
“I never let my disability define me. It was a challenge, but I always believed I could succeed,” says Charles. “Now, I’m not only practicing law; I’m also advocating for greater accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities in the legal profession.”
Today, Charles mentors visually impaired students, offering them guidance and encouragement to pursue their own dreams. His story is one of unrelenting perseverance, and he remains an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. “Every step of the way, I had to prove that I was capable of achieving my goals. I want others to know that facing challenges doesn’t mean you can’t succeed. With the right support and determination, anything is possible,” he says.
